How often does your Credit Card provider block your card incorrectly?

Postby Johnmcl7 » 19 Jan 2017, 00:59

I'm pretty pissed off today as Barclaycard once again blocked my credit card and declined a legimate transaction for security reasons, before Christmas I contacted them to let them know I would be using the card abroad which they confirmed and then blocked my card the first time I used it abroad. I decided to look for alternatives to replace the card with but the concept of a non-Amex cashback card seems dead.

Since you guys probably have similar spending habits to me I'm wondering if I'm overly hard on Barclays and you have similar issues or Barclays are being overly restrictive?

It's fine with natwest. When they did block my card it was because of fraud on the account. I inform them on the website first of any travel and the card goes through fine!

A while ago I did have a block on something and I believe I had an instant phone call to confirm, but I can't remember what card it was, probably Lloyds. I generally only use a Nectar Amex and a Lloyds Avios Duo, either seem fine. The Lloyds one, many years ago, did stop a fraudulent transaction, so that was nice.

I often use the cards abroad. No idea if I had to tell them before.

The only time I bothered to tell a bank I was going abroad it blocked my card. This was a Barclays debit card at the time.
My g/f occasionally has issues with Santander.

I very rarely have an issue, although I did try to buy some memory from Crucial last week and the order wouldn't go through, although I think this was Crucial not progressing the order rather than my Credit Card provider.

For info - If you're travelling abroad take a look at a Card/App called "Revolut", I used it last summer for a holiday and I was quite impressed.

Thanks for the responses which suggest Barclays are being over the top in blocking my card so often, I guess I should just order up a Halifax Clarity card to give me an alternative and slightly cheaper to use abroad. Then if any better cashback options come along I can go for that to replace the Barclaycard.

I'm an advocate of more (feeless) credit cards just in case one doesn't work and for credit ratings. Unless you're a shop-a-holic, then a very bad idea!
