The Grand Tour - Top Gear mk2

Postby Johnmcl7 » 18 Nov 2016, 17:42

I thought it was brilliant from start to finish as it has all the good stuff from Top Gear but without any of the rubbish, it just seemed to be them mostly having a laugh themselves which is always good to watch. My favourite quote among many good ones was Hammond commenting 'It's f****** wheel spinning in sixth gear!' although I did also like 'That car is trying to kill me and I'm not even in it'

Spoiler:
I did do a big eye roll when it looked like they were going to have a replacement for star in a reasonably priced car so did chuckle at each of the celebrities accidentally being murdered. I thought the opening was really nicely done starting in the dreary UK with the radio reports of Clarkson leaving Top Gear then getting in the muscle car and joined by Hammond and May.

hoping the rest very much now focusses on the new grand tour rather than comparing themselves to the old format. Looking forward to watching the rest

Well having watched the first one in 4k we realised that if they keep the focus that wide open, then you'll see us behind Clarkson head when they sit down!

Fingers crossed anyway!

I was well impressed with their choice of Dredd music during the Beemer section and
Spoiler:
the Porsche 918, I'm not normally a Porsche fan but I do like that 918. I was surprised the P1 was slower round the lap though, as its hybrid system seems designed for hot laps and little else due to the low capacity and no regeneration.

Nope, no call although it turns out on those dates I'll be over 4,000 miles away from Loch Ness so I'm glad I didn't get tickets as that would have been annoying. Someone at work got a call but it doesn't look like they're getting tickets.

I really liked the gaming references in last week's episode, some subtle nods to online "accidents" (bring me back to the good old RHC days) and just goes to show they've absolutely nailed their demographic on this forum!

Quietly confident they're onto a winner here moving forward and I've seen an interview with jezza where he basically says this is top gear in everything but name. Also hopefull top gear bbc season 2 will give us something different too - win win.

Nah, I'm not really enjoying it much. A few laughs here and there but I'm tending to drift off and play on my phone when I put it on. Thought the latest episode started off well but then (for me) went crap again like the resetting game episode.

this weeks missed the mark a little for me in the sense that they made a point america muscle could save you 100k but then with that much scenery to play with in italy they could have invested more in the cars and landscapes than taming hammond.
I would have loved to have a look around the rolls a bit more and to pick out the boat decking on the back etc but it was basically just a filler between :donut: :donut: :donut:

still enjoying it though

Spoiler:
I thought they completely overegged the muscle car joke and went too far with Hammond deliberately trying to be an American idiot, I still liked a lot of the episode but I didn't think they needed to go as far. Hammond seemed to clearly enjoy the Challenger and that on its own was quite amusing in pissing the other two off. Plus I have a soft spot for that Challenge, I like a lot of the current American muscle cars and that supercharged whine along with the V8 sounds awesome. Plus I'm not a fan of Astons in general and less so that one, would take an SLS which is designed for those parts rather than some knock off Aston using the parts from the spares bin.

I thought it was almost good this week (Episode 4?). I was laughing quite a bit at some of the sustainable car parts. But it's the silly setups with the naturally comedic outcomes which are good. Not a whole set piece with a predetermined outcome.
