How to change N900 Boot screen video

Postby Replicant » 10 Feb 2010, 01:21

N900 Boot Video change process

OK preparation time

First thing you need to do is to go to the App Manager and install rootsh as you will not be able to fully access root privileges before doing this. While you are at it I would also install Leafpad or a similar text editor as you will need this later.

Then download the Boot Video of your choice and save it to your Documents folder. I chose to rename mine to ‘n900short1.avi’. REMEMBER TO CHANGE EVERY INCIDENCE of n900short1.avi listed below to match the name of your own file.

Okay first you need to move your chosen video to the relevant place and then symlink it. One word of warning DO NOT type in any of the > symbols you see in the code below these are there to signify that a space should be there.

OK so the first part of the code for this is as follows:-

Code: Select all

sudo gainroot
mv>/home/user/MyDocs/.documents/n900short1.avi>/opt/

Next I chose to open the hildon-welcome file for editing as follows:-

Code: Select all

Leafpad>/etc/hildon-welcome.d/default.conf

This will open the Leafpad text editor which contains the following code

Code: Select all

[hildon-welcome]
filename=Hands-v32-h264.avi

edit it so it looks like this and then save the file.

Code: Select all

[hildon-welcome]
#filename=Hands-v32-h264.avi
filename=n900short1.avi

This comments out the original video and adds your own.

Finally you need to do the symlink as follows:-

Code: Select all

cd>/usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
ln>-s>/opt/n900short1.avi>n900short1.avi

Thats your lot – reboot the N900 and enjoy.

Thanks for the guide Chris, where is the existing avi? Is it possible to simply rename it to something else and put the avi of your choice renamed back to the original?

as i had to edit the hildon-welcome file ipreferred to comment out the existing reference and put in the new one as its much easier to reverse.
there is talk of other ways to do it but i havent looked into these yet.

i am also going to set up SSH client so i can connect via a laptop as far easier to type etc

I used OpenSSH on the N810 - I would presume it works on the n900 too

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/openssh/

works well.
