5.1 audio on my dvd player?

Postby Dax_Inside » 04 Jun 2009, 13:16

Im staying in someone elses room at the moment and as a favour he asked me to sort out the surround sound for his dvd player.

Im not sure his dvd player supports 5.1 though, infact untill now i didnt realise i how little i know about anything to do with tv's, dvd players, or anything related.

Here is a pic of the sockets on the DVD player
Image

Which ones do i use? The scart cable only has 3 connections, so do i need 2 cables? I use a scart cable to connect the dvd player to the TV aswell, but only the yellow connection, leaving the other 2 free.

The surround sound main unit has 6 sockets on it, R/L - W/C - SR/SL.

Any help would be great. I feel like ive reached a new low of cluelessness.

Thanks :?

scart to phono? Just use the top yellow on the left, and the lower red and white ones. Thats the audio.

i think the coaxil is the main audio out for 5.1? Not 100%. i assume john or advocate or someone will know for sure!

Thanks for the quick reply. No idea what scart to phono means really. I just know the 3 connection cables are called scart leads.

If the bottom right 2 are for the audio, i take it the dvd player isnt made for 5.1, as the surround unit needs 6 connections of input.

i really wish i had a manual or even a remote control for this player. lol. might have to spend $20 and get a new one.

i think it means the DVD player doesnt have an Amp. So if the 65.1 system has an amp built in, you need to get the audio from the DVD intop the Amp. Usually i see digital optical ports. But it might be coax on this DVD player. So dont be disheartened yet! Check whether the speaker system has a coax input!

looks like that player only has 2 channel sound to me... white and red - left and right...

if surround sound is a must Id say get a new player.

John may know of some trickery to get a 2 channel to output to 5.1 though

I'm pretty sure you can't get true 5.1 sound with that dvd player unless it has a coaxial input on the speakers. You will probably need a proper AV amp to do the job properly though.

You might be able to get sound coming out the speakers with the red/white phono's, but it will just be stereo if effect with more speakers.

Same as what others have said, if you have a proper 5.1 system with an amp that has co-axial in it should just be a case of connecting the two coaxial ports together and off you go.

The surround sound doesnt have a coax input, its a cheap set up but the only one sold here (Iraq).

Its got 2 chanel input which i just tried. Sounds comes out of all the speakers which is all i need really, but for some reason its really quiet even on full volume. The speakers definitly go louder than that. Any ideas on that one?

If you had a remote for the dvd player I would try turning up the volume on that. Sometimes you can control the volume from the player its self.

Otherwise, it may be that the dvd player cannot drive the speakers like an amp would? Might explain the low volume? But if your speakers plug in to a poer socket and power themselves that way then it souldnt be an issue.

i just changed the voltage settings from 110 to 220 and now it doesnt come on. not even when i set it back to 110.

Well thats one way to make the problem go away i guess.

Sounds like you may have blown the internal fuse. Should be easy enough to replace and they are normally glass so you can see if its gone.

you would be able to get pro logic 5.1 via the red and white phono out if you plugged it into a pro logic amp. to get digital 5.1 you would need at least an av amp with a coaxial in.

if you are looking for a cheap set up, would be better to get an all in one dvd / amp / 5.1 speaker package. No idea how to get hold of AV gear in Iraq though :(

I ended up buying a new dvd player and speaker set for the room. All works fine now, the dvd player has proper 5.1 sockets that match the speakers main unit and it all seems to work well.

Thankyou for all the suggestions. Ive learnt something today, makes a change :geek:
