Samsung Galaxy Note 8 now, or wait for S9?

Postby EviL Ras » 12 Nov 2017, 18:59

Hi guys,

my S6 edge is giving me performance issues so I'm ready to throw it out! But my original plan was to wait for the S9 to arrive (in march at MWC). But seeing as black friday is coming in 2 weeks, I'm toying with the idea of upgrading to the Note 8 instead. As the potential is that the new S9 will likely sport the same dual camera, and that they still haven't solved the fingerprint scanner issue.

So whats the thoughts gents? Note 8 now as its class leading anyway? Or limp on as the S9 is likely to bring something unmissable?

Hard to say. All depends if you can last another 6 months as probably won't release S9 until early April.

Why a Note 8 and not the S8? Is it just for the camera?

I'd say it comes down to whether you want a big screen or not rather than anything else, the Note 8 is a big device and a lot bigger than the S6 Edge which feels tiny in comparison. I know some people swear by the S-pen but it wouldn't really sway my choice, I've not been that impressed with the second camera on the Note 8 either as it's using a smaller sensor and the phone regularly chooses cropping the wide angle sensor instead. I'd be quite keen if the second sensor was a ultra wide angle one instead as I've really no interest in the faux shallow DoF shots from using the secondary telephoto lens.

I have spent a long time deciding between the S8 Plus and the Note 8 as on paper they seem very similar but the Note 8's squared off design, sharper curves and more scaling options makes the screen increase feel bigger than the 0.1in on paper suggests. A big screen is one of my main priorities in choosing a new phone so I'm planning to go for a Note 8 now the prices have calmed down (£690 for one at the weekend from Amazon Italy, shame my no fees card isn't here).

If you want a big screen I'd go for one but otherwise I'd hold on, an S6 Edge certainly shouldn't be having performance issues. They were our standard phone at work for a while so I deal with them fairly regularly and my Mum has one as well, it's a bit annoying how much quicker it is than my aging Note 4.

OK what about the Google Pixel 2 XL?
The camera is arguably the best Android camera around and is Vanilla Android too.

There's quite a lot of issues with the Pixel 2 XL at the moment, some of which shared by the V30 as LG seem to be struggling with their first proper go at a small OLED screen for a while:

The samsungs seem to have the most technology built in. Hence i'll stay with them.

S8 is 6 months old, where as the note is 2 months. but still 4 months til the S9 is coming.

otherwise yes, the pixel 2, and the razer phone are both decent.

I still think it simply comes down to whether you want the bigger screen or not, the S8 may have been released before the Note 8 but they share mostly the same hardware and having a desktop that runs a lot of high performance applications on just 8GB ram I'm not convinced about 6GB ram being a big improvement on a phone.
