Fanless PC

Postby steffcip » 13 Sep 2015, 20:18

I just built (I had a sponsor and some good discounts - Amazon was very good at offering me discounts for 3 orders and QuietPC as well they offered me a good discount for the case) a silent/fanless pc with the specs
- streacom fc8 alpha case
- streacom Nano150 Fanless PSU - no fan
- i7-4790s - no fan
- MSI H97I AC
- Crucial BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00CEU Sport 16 GB kit (8GBx2), Ballistix 240-pin DIMM
- APPLE SSD SM256C with SATA adapter (I had it already from an upgrade)
- no pci-e video card yet (intel HD 4600 in cpu) but I may buy one later if I can find a good one with passive cooling

I set up 85% max cpu in power options
See below CPU temp whilst doing windows updates

as I said I had some sponsors and discounts below but full price would have been
cpu £250 (less amazon discount)
mb £80 (less amazon discount)
case £135 (full price QuietPC but they gave me a discount)
psu £71 (from scan I have free delivery for life)
ram £58 (amazon warehouse deals) £63 I think new - (less amazon discount)
ssd - I had this one
dvdrw - not installed yet but I have a spare one
I chose this cpu as 65w tdp even though the case can take up to 90w I think
I think I can add a low profile graphic card as well and still be ok with the 150w nano psu

What is actually cooling the processor? I'm surprised you can passively cool a 65W processor without any ridges on the case, the passive industrial units we use at work with ULV processors have a heatsink design to use the entire case as a cooling system, although they're required to run at particularly low tempetures.

I am going to replace the SSD as the apple ssd is slower than samsung/crucial even though the chips are made by samsung ?! benchmarks online confirm this
anyway because of the form factor of the apple ssd it will be sold for more money than the cost of a standard 2.5" ssd
does anyone need to upgrade the ssd maybe from 128gb to 256gb into a macbook air I think 2011/2012? I can find out exact model it is compatible with

Very nice - I was looking at a Streacom FC5 for a media centre PC, there is a gap in my tv cabinet where it would fit perfectly, chickened out in the end those cases are not cheap but they look very neat
