i7 Self Build Advice

Postby henrybutt » 24 Oct 2009, 16:48

Hi All,

Just about to order all the bits and bobs to build my own i7 rig for testing / benchmarking products for my new job (and some casual gaming :P). I'm pretty set on the spec. now but just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to improve it at all :).

- Intel i7 860 2.8GHz / Intel Extreme DP55KG P55 Motherboard - £380 (OCUK)
- Corsair XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600MHZ RAM - £86 (OCUK)
- Hiper Anubis Midi Tower Case - £58 (OCUK)
- WD Caviar Black 1TB 7.2krpm - £69 (Novatech)
- Corsair HX 850W Modular PSU - £133 (Novatech)
- Samsung DVD-RAM Drive - £18 (Novatech)
- Novatech GeForce 9500GT 1GB DD2 - £40 (Novatech)
- Viewsonic VX2260wm 22" HD LCD Monitor - £144 (Novatech)

= £928 inc. VAT

+ CoolIT Domino (Free Sample)

The 9500GT GPU is only temporary as I should be getting a free 285 GTX sample in the near future ;)

Thanks in Advance

Are you going to be overclocking or not?

Not sure exactly what GPUs I will be getting as samples but they will be either 285 GTX or 275 GTX and possibly 2 of them so need the powerful PSU. 9500GT is just a budget option for the meantime so I can use my system while waiting for them to arrive :).

As with the advice I gave Ras in his thread, dont bother with SLI, get yourself a 5870 and then upgrade when something better comes along. It will work out a similar cost but give you consistently better performance across the life of the machine.

If your going to be buying your CPU and mobo from Overclockers I would reccomend the same bundle Ras got too.

Put those 2 together and your onto a cracking start, or if your on a budget go for the i5 bundle instead.

If you went for the first 2 links the rest of it is pretty much personal choice, in terms of HDDs PSU and case.

Thanks very much for your suggestions Binnsy... I'll take a closer look at that i7 bundle now - looks like great value :). As for the GPU though.... the GTX 285s are free so I'm not going to go for that one (although if i was buying one I probably would !).

oh aye, aside from the GIGANTIC CPU cooler, the bundle is good. Overcloecked from 2.6ghz to 4ghz here. Which is nice! And 6gb of ram is effortlessly cutting through anything i chuck its way!

Well I have a CoolIT domino that I would use instead anyway (expect a review of this in the near future for the TP :)) so the large cooler wouldn't be an issue :)

Im not familiar with that case, will it be able to provide sufficient cooling for that setup and any overclocking you do with it?
