Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor X9000

Postby Danial » 20 Feb 2009, 23:51

Hello

I notice this processor is an option for the Dell M1730. Can anyone comment as to whether they would pay the extra £579 for it and why? Just wondering if its worth it. I read that it probably wouldn't be worth it because its graphics that are the bottleneck not processing.

Also, the M1730 was introduced around September 2007. Does anyone know what's next in line if anything?

Thanks!

It seems a lot for what now is quite an 'old' processor. The T9600 is better than the X9000 now, unfortunately Dell don't offer this. If you did want the pick of the newer processors, you'd have to look at a different model / make.

As for new XPSness, there's a discussion here:

The main advantage of a good processor in a laptop is that you can't upgrade it easily / at all, so generally you want to get the best processor practicably available when buying the laptop.

As far as I'm aware the X9000 has an unlocked multiplier which you can overclock in the bios which is why there's a premium for it.

I've not seen a hint of anything next in line, I'm surprised they haven't even updated the graphics cards.

for my money anything with the 9800 GTX cards are the highest at the moment. Dont think they run them in sli yet tho i may be wrong.

would love to see GTX 260 in a laptop, buit your genitals would be history!

Well they've got them in sli at the top of this list (after restricting the list to nvidia only):

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Gra ... 844.0.html

The 8800GTX sli is till the spec on the M1730 and they're three places back. Can't they just pop a couple of those 9800's in instead or does that require a complete top-down re-model?

Rock and Kobalt both have 9800M GTX's in SLI in Rock's SL8 and Kobalt's Comanche SLI. Looked up Novatech and Alienware too, but neither of those offer this as far as I can see.

But they're not cheap!

Haven't been keeping up with Rock since the troubles. I thought they were a no-no?
What I like about Dell is that for M1730 support they come to you whereas, as far as I understand, Rock and Kobalt require you to pack up the laptop and send it off.
If I remember correctly Dell weren't that far behind Rock with their M1730 so perhaps they have something in the pipeline re a quad processed 9800GTX sli machine.

Thanks everyone for the help, appreciate it.

Yeah, for me dell support is great. I love the fact that when i've had issues with the the LED lights, the screen, and the power adapter, i got a fix next day at home. And you really cant say fairer than that! Would hate to send it away to get repaired. And as you keep them for 3 years now days, i was very pleased that i got the warranty! And i will buy a warranty on my next one!

Sadly i think the 9800M GTX cracks out a lot of heat so they cant just swap the cards in the 1730. Which is a shame. That said, if this died and they offered me a 1730 as an upgrade, i would jump at it! i know its only 8800GTX, but it fairs well nowdays. MUCH better than my 7950 GTX fairs anyway!

Gotta agree that the 8800M GTX SLI is still gonna be really good, especially considering the price difference between that and the 9800 GTXs. I read somewhere that the 9800M GT and GTS were practically the same card as the 8800M GTX anyway (I need to source that...)

Rock seem fine these days now they're under the Stone umbrella - I've just bought a laptop off them. But onsite warranty is very convenient. I know it costs a bit more, but Dell always seem to have a deal on it.

Yeah, the stats for your xtreme 620 do look tasty. Sadly, i priced up the laptop i wanted on kobalt and it got to £3500.... Owie!

Well, they must have found a way because I see Dell have now upgraded the M1730 sli option to 9800GT, or for an extra £230 you can have a couple of 9800GTX's. I wonder if there will be any reviews going.

Although with talk of GTX 260 in laptops now, gonna be an interesting year!

Yes, the GTX260 and the GTX280.
They're still behind the 9800GTX sli on the list http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Gra ... 844.0.html
Wonder how far off the GTX260 and GTX280 are for sli mode? Guess that's next and for a few extra pounds too no doubt.

The GTX option is no longer offered, just the GT cards. Anyone know why?
