Driver Heaven launched their beta mobility modder yesterday for NVIDIA. Anyone care to have a stab?

It's like the mod on laptopsvideo2go, but it mods the driver for you, will a nice little app

The fan speeds on my 1730 have dropped since using modded drivers. Usually this wouldn't bother me but given Nvidia's revelation that a stack of their mobile GPU chips are heat intolerant, this is a bit worrying. Anybody else notice a drop in fan speeds after using drivers modded with this tool?

That's a point actually, this better not be Nvidia's way of stealthily down-clocking people's mobile solutions to avoid further GPU problems.

I've not noticed any performance difference (for better or worse) but am wondering if the modded drivers have somehow gimped the cooling system. Unfortunately I can't remember what my average temps used to be but the fans are definitely running at a lower speed that before, the 1730 is like a jet engine usually. Further testing over the weekend required I think..

Right this is interesting - the guys who actually developed mobility modder claimed that the GPU actually runs up to 30 degrees cooler (based on an 8800M GTX) with the latest NVIDIA drivers. They were actually using a dell machine to test on. Dell have in fact fed this information back to their R&D dept who apparently will be implementing a solution!

30* is an insane amount of a temperature loss if the MVDM doesn't underclock. I can't believe it can do anything to make a mobile GPU lose 30 degrees any other way.

Yes, a 30 degree saving is unbelievable for driver update/mod - on a lot of systems 30 degrees represents the difference between an idle and loaded GPU. I wonder if systems where the cooling system isn't hooked directly into the BIOS, but where the sensors readings are reported through the GPU BIOS/driver, are misreading the actual temps and reporting them lower than they are. If this is the case it could be potentially fatal for the GPU because the reported temp dictates fan speed.

I would try this on my peg 665 but since 7600 cards are as rare as rocking horse sh*t I think I'll give it a miss and play safe.
