Postby UKIan » 24 Jun 2008, 23:36

My 330 is ill, I need an external dvd writer, any advice? I can't find anything sufficiently cheap and cheerful so far.

I caught a cable with my foot and sent it crashing to the floor. Some how the drive door has caught and buckled the top of the chassis. I guess a replacement drive could work, I'll have to see if I can unbend the top bit though! Alternatively I can send it in for an insurance repair, but that took ages last time.

I'll investigate that caddy as well, cunning idea.

How to link notebook with dvd-writer used in desktop? Is it possible to link a notebook with a dvd-writer (very much in the same way as linking an external 2.5" HD with USB cable to the notebook)? Let me explain further: the dvd-writer is in a desktop (it's not the USB plug-in type) and the desktop does not have a hard drive now. So, I'm playing with the idea of linking the desktop dvd-writer with cables to the notebook.

Well, at work we make sure they're on the same network. The (on XP anyway) got to start -> admin tools -> local security policies -> Local policies -> user right assignments -> add in a power users group.

Then right click on dvd drive share it. and to get to it i click start -> run -> \\computer\drive letter. and boom, there it works.

But thats a work thing. Might be different for home pc's and vista.

Hi,

Seeing as you probably cant boot the desktop into xp to share the drive on the network as Ras suggested I'd say buy a caddy like the one listed above and remove the dvd drive from the desktop, place it in the caddy - job done.

I think you got the wrong end of the stick there Ras - I think they want to physically connect the DVD to the laptop. I have done this using a caddy and I also have the same cable as John where you can connect any Ide or SATA drive to a USB port.

ah, fair enough! We tend to just share them out! much easier than ripping the things out. but then all our machines are on support friendly XP!

Bear in mind the PC the person was asking about doesn't even have a hard drive never mind operating system. Also sharing the drive is pretty slow and only good for reading, not for writing.

It depends on how temporary the arrangement is, there are cheap USB->IDE adapters that will do the job but if it's longer term it would be better to invest in a caddy.
