New Dell XPS 13

Postby Johnmcl7 » 21 Jan 2015, 02:37

I thought this machine needed its own topic as it's now up for sale in the UK:

One big catch is that you can't really choose your configuration, you can choose a slightly different processor or a 512GB SSD instead of 256GB SSD but that's it. In particular you can't choose the 1080p non-touch screen which seems to be the preference in the US as it has a matt finish, it's cheaper, it's less power draw for the battery and there's no scaling issues as everything can run natively. In the US, there's an i5/4GB/128GB SSD/HD option which is substantially cheaper at around £600 while the i7/8GB/256GB/QHD+ option is £1100 and the SSD is easily upgradeable.

To be fair to Dell and unusually the prices in the US and the UK seem much the same even when including VAT in the UK price and around £1100 is similar to other Ultrabooks for similar spec. Dell have told some people that the lower option will be available in a few months which I'd normally wait for but the death of my Sony Ultrabook is forcing my hand. I'm also concerned about the favourable comparisons to Apple hardware as that's not my sort of thing.

I guess given it may be a while before they're shipping it would be sensible to put an order in and by the time it arrives there may be more information on the 1080p options and Dell are normally good for returns.

looks nice, slim 13" form factor is a perfect balance for me on the macbook. Big enough to get a full browser experience, light enough to use in bed / couch etc

Matt, I'm disappointed in you - I was sure you'd be telling me to buy it.

Anyway, ordered one.

It's been dispatched!

Unfortunately based on previous orders, the shipping company doesn't know where Scotland is (classing it as a remote island) so it usually goes round the country, goes missing and eventually gets up to Scotland. It would be nice not to have that two or three week display.
