RIP Kobalt

Postby PhilHibbs » 29 May 2012, 15:07

I just had a look at Kobalt's web site to see what their current offerings are, and found out that they wound up 6 months ago. Shame.

Who are the current players in the UK high-end consumer laptop space?

Alienware!!

If you're in the uk and want an M17x with i7 2.60ghz, 8Gb RAM, 1600 x 900 WLED, 750Gb HDD, 2Gb nvidia 675m GTX, and blueray. Get it for £1380 instead of £1799.

go to topcashback and click through on the alienware link to get 5.05% cashback. then on the dell site, search for N00W7M05. Then use code X918JSXFXNCQ4K for 10% off. Then buy, and never regret!!

I don't think I could stand an Alienware machine, I think they look vile.

I wondering the other day what Clevo resellers there are these days in the UK, Novatech is the only one I can think of?

I think PC Specialist is the only only other one.

Oh, and of course, Rock... although they're doing their usual trick of having an out of date lineup. They currently sell two very aged laptops, and one aged laptop (although to be fair the 15" does come with a mighty graphics card, better than you'll get in Novatech's gaming range) but you're paying high prices for last year's (or older) technology.

I would steer clear of Rock these days..

I have heard they are cutting corners with quality even more so than they were when I was an engineer with them...

Its really sad to see that..
Yeah!

Shame the M17x doesn't appeal visually, there's not much to touch it. I bought mine last year in Australia, an M17xR3 in US spec, as that's what Dell AU sell and at US prices too! When I compared it to the UK offerings it was a bonus no-brainer.

Quite frankly, like my XPS M1730 before it, which I still use as a second machine, the M17x has been great. My previous Clevo clones all shat themselves due to hardware failures and wound up in skips. It will likely be a cold day in hell before I trust another one.

I don't think I've had any other machine that has drawn as much attention to itself as the XPS M1730, there just seems to be something about it which stands out to people between the huge size, its lighting system and secondary display. Still in service with my brother, the cooling system was an impressive piece of engineering.

Although I'm not keen on the Alienware brand I'd put up with it for a suitable machine as I have with my desktop.

Nothing specific. Just curious. I'm still happy with my 4-year-old Kobalt Comanche.
