M1330 Replacement

Postby Tappy » 06 Jul 2011, 11:39

Hello,

The mighty XPS M1330 is reaching the end of its life, its ageing process mostly sped up by the Missus taking ownership of it and not treating it with the respect such an icon of a laptop deserves. It's getting slow, does odd things, makes weird noises, parts are broken where she's fallen alseep with it on her lap and its fallen off, y'know, the usual symptoms of an uncaring user.

Anyway, like the caring (foolish) guy that I am, and it's her Birthday, I'm looking at possible replacements.

The size has been ideal, all she uses it for is torrenting, watching tv series and some Graphic Design stuff (but she's not a resolution whore), ocassionally she'll want to play a real game, she's been eyeing up Civ V, which is quite demanding actually.

So Dell don't seem to offer anything of that size anymore, short of an Alienware, but I was thinking more like £500 than £1000!

The business laptops, like the Vostro, seem to come with just the Intel jobby for graphics, which would be no good. And the M11x would just make me jealous, especially if it is abused like the XPS was, so she can't be having that!

HP seem to have some decent models around the size I'm looking at.

What about waiting for something with the new AMD processor with the integrated graphics core? That has superb graphics performance apparently.

Oh, and I am also looking for a replacement for my M1330. It's starting to degrade and has been an impressive workhorse. Unfortunately I can't find anything like the M1330 unless I spend ridiculous amounts, plus I have the extended battery which gave a great 7-8 hours.

Have toyed with the idea of the Duo, but the crap battery life puts me off along with the cost. A samsung netbook has the same or better spec with 10 hour battery life for much less.

There must be loads of us... we need to start a support group.
I really am surprised how little there is to choose from in terms of a replacement. There's a decent looking 14" Asus coming out, but that will be giga pounds, probably.

The Adamo (Dell) is the closest I can find, but stupid money. I got my M1330 in one of Dells weekend deal busters for half price and a free battery upgrade, so £1440 became a smidge under £700. Idiots did put 32-bit on despite the 4gb ram upgrade though.

Been looking at shiny tech goodies this morning, I really liked the ultra-thin 13" Asus U36, but wish it had a higher res screen. Definitely on the wishlist though.

Also, the Asus 10" slate thing with the keyboard/battery dock is awesome, but think I'll wait for a 3g version. If only Android supported outlook and exchange server, I could tell my wife she needed one for work.

I'd say that's good as there's plenty of choice with 15in screens plus there's a good selection of 14in machines as well if she wants something in between 13 and 15 inches.

I am surprised and disappointed Dell never followed up with an XPS M1330 replacement (the M1340 was just a slight upgrade) particularly as I think it's a great all round, it was popular here, I've seen quite a few around and many people complimented the size of my M1330. At £680 it was great value for money as I got mine with the upgraded processor, hard drive, screen and battery, the machine has had such hard use the keyboard characters are gone and the battery is finished but the machine is still working fine despite never having its GPU replaced.

I was lucky enough to bag my bargain Vaio Z5 which is a superb successor to the XPS M1330 but sadly the Vaios are completely lacking the bargain price of the M1330.
