MSI gx740 opinions

Postby Malice » 12 Nov 2010, 01:42

Hey guys,

Thoughts on this laptop? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... =LT-024-MS

Best specs I've seen for a sub 1k machine so far.

I've read a few reviews and all gave good marks for gaming performance, but some were less then impressed with build quality (which varies as we all know). After spending £1300 on the Rock then to see the GFX card die in a little over 2 years, and both hinges eventually snapping I have to be a bit more wary of the build quality. So, as much as I like cheap I do want to get my moneys worth out of it.

My pros and cons:

Pros:

17" (15" is too small for me)
Top dedicated graphics
Cheap for spec
Decent CPU (i7 would have been nice, but i5 is still a big step up from my 2ghz T72 in the XCTX)

Cons:

Build quality?
Heat & noise (XCTX was neither quiet or cool running though)

The battery didn't get a good review, but not really an issue as it'll be on mains the majority of the time.

Thoughts and comments? Anyone had dealing with MSI before? Good or bad. Also any other recommendations for a decent spec on a mid range budget. Only must haves is a decent CPU, good dedicated graphics and a 17" screen would prefer 1650x1080. I know blu-ray and a HD panel are out of the question for a sub 1k machine.

Cheers

Been doing a bit more looking..

Found a couple of other options. Actually get more for you're money then I thought.

Samsung - i5 460m/HD+Blu-ray/GT 330M http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.208-3928.aspx - Sub £900

Dell XPS 17 - i5 560m/HD+Blu-ray/GT 435M - Sub £800

The Dell looks to be a good option. How does the 435M stack up against the HD5870?

Had a look. Nothing there that can beat any of the above options.

I've always liked the look of the msi ones. but John has always said the build quality and support will probably make you wish you'd gotten something else!

My brother has had a CR700 MSI for nearly 2 years now, he doesn't game much but its in daily use as a music centre and kid entertainer, stood up very well and has had no problems with it at all. The build quality seems reasonably good to me. Nothing broken on it unlike my x770 which has needed a new mobo, now the headphone port has gone, and the screen hinge been replaced....
