Netbooks - which one?

Postby robbo » 04 Apr 2010, 17:15

Alright guys.

Slight chance I'll be darting off to Thailand soon for a family funeral so am looking at possibly getting a netbook of sorts by Wednesday. Seems a bit extreme but I've assignments due in soon and an exam to revise for in a couple of weeks. My current 13" peg 335 has a growing list of ailments along with small battery life and I'm holding out until more i3/i5s get into similar sized new laptops before getting a full replacement for it. This is why I may or may not choose to get a 10" or below netbook for now.

What's good at the moment?

Have just looked at the new Dell Mini 10 which has a Atom N450 single core 1.66GHz, W7 starter, 1366x768, 1gb ram, 250gb hd for £279.

Not looked at Acer or MSI. Please, no one mention an ipad!

This is most probably a rush of blood here but I can download course material as pdfs and have already made images of course dvds to my hard drive - so it is a viable option. It's just the expense. And an excuse for new tech...

It seems a lot of money to me to be honest, I organised a Compaq one for my brother for around 180 quid qhich was 1.6Ghz, 1GB ram, XP and a 160GB drive and probably wouldn't really spend any more than that on one. Coming up for three hundred pounds I think you're way too close to the CULV laptops.

Yeah, Thailand wasnt very good for tech. Whereas hong kong you can get anything!

I'd look at a cheap laptop, instead of netbook.

Thailand is good for dvds, software and gaming stuff but never really looked for tech stuff like laptops and cameras there. Anyway, I won't have time to look for tech whilst out there. Will only be in Bangkok to wait for a couple of hours while I wait for my connecting flight.

The reasoning for a netbook instead of cheap laptop would be the portability of size and (hopefully) long battery life. With also wanting to get a 'proper' laptop at a later date it could be good to have a travel piece for future use.

Yeah that is a bummer. Am thinking though that at the moment I've all the dvd material I need on my current hard drive so can transfer it across.

Will go to staples, comet, pc world etc tomorrow to have a look at them in the flesh. See if any grab me.

Thought I checked the dell outlet earlier and there was nothing there but will look again.

I was going to recommend the Outlet but didn't think you'd get one in time.

Been trying for a while to add to my basket at the dell outlet but it's not working. And as you and Ras say, unlikely to get one in time.

The more I think about this, and having slept on it, the more I'm thinking just take out a few books and a pen! My sensible head is winning and not the impulse buy head that was about when I started up the thread. Anyway, off to the shops in a bit to see if shiny shiny overrides grey matter.
