That's because it's not a netbook....

Indeed, just because netbooks have grown to small laptop size (anything above a 10" screen really shouldn't get the netbook stamp imo) doesn't make this a netbook.

For a ultra portable laptop with that spec its actually a rather epic price!

I would prefer similar in a 13inch machine. Looks good though.

Just priced up an i7 version of the M11x R2.

Stateside $670 / UK £990 (can't remember the exact prices).

Main differences as far as I can tell, is that in the UK you can specify a colour other than Black, not that you have to.

I quite fancied one of these until I saw the US price , now I feel sullied and violated.

 Wow. It's a weekly thing of mine to price up one of these, just to realise it's still about £800 more than I have spare. In the US, I'd only be £300 short! Maybe there's some 260% sales tax that they forgot to include on the US one...

I see a load of these on ebay from the US with worldwide shipping. What would be the disadvantages of getting a US one? I'm thinking, being ripped off by dodgy sellers, no warranty, possible import tax (but that's still cheaper than a UK one).

I am going to Florida in a few weeks, maybe they sell them in their Currys equivalent stores and the like... I still can't afford one though!

Go to costco - the American one is much better than the British one and you should be able to sign up for a card there (or find someone willing to let you go in with them and use their card) they normally stock Dells.

The other possibly minor issue is you'd have a US keyboard which annoyingly has the left shift beside the Z key rather backslash. As a frequent user of the backslash key I find this very annoying which is one of the main reasons I wouldn't get a US machine unless the keyboard could be easily changed. I have occasionally considered buying from the US but aside from the keyboard the issue of the warranty is a concern (although I think it should be ok with Dell, I don't want to find out otherwise later on) plus the cost saving shrinks quite a bit when you consider shipping + insurance + VAT + handling fees.

Another possible option is to keep an eye on the outlet as occasionally M11x's crop up at a reasonable price.

Actually my Vaio P11z has the shift next to the z key. Indeed, it is annoying at times, but for a few hundred quid, I can probably adapt! I've been looking on the outlet to see what price these come up at, but I'm yet to see one. There's not even the tick box option for one. Infact, I can't even order a new one atm, since the spec page it tells me that they are not available in my business region. Don't know what's up with that...

Interesting point with the warranty. I do often end up speaking to America or India whenever I call Dell support for the XPS M1330, so it could well be an international thing.

Well I tried every shop I could see out there, but there was nothing. :(
But I do see a lot more appearing on the outlet now, so I'll keep an eye out (for a laptop I can't afford :? )
