The base 1,600 one isn't actually too bad, I just wish it had the blu-ray drive which I think is a crazy 500 quid addon at Sonystyle.

Play have the top spec up for 2,200 pounds which is not too bad given it has the i7 processor, 6GB ram, quad hard drives and 1080p screen. Annoyingly though it lacks the blu-ray drive (I don't think it's an error in the spec) and Play generally aren't to be trusted with high value electronics.

VPCZ1190X on US site
with i7 and 6gb upgrades
= a bit under £1400 if you have someone in the US to buy it for you

That's a big if though plus you're stuck with a US layout (not usually easy to change on Vaios) and possibly no easy warranty.

I've had a look at US prices on ebay but can't see any decent spec machines plus I don't think the exchange rate is too favourable at the moment. The full spec machine isn't available here yet while the lower one is, it looks like the top one will be here end of the month.

Yeah I was going to post a topic on this one as I'm very disappointed in it although I guess that's good for the wallet. I don't like that it's no longer a self contained powerhouse like the older models as I don't think saving a small amount of weight and thickness is worth losing both the optical drive and external graphics card for.

While Sony have produced plenty of thin and light notebooks they're not Z series machines, it's not nitpicking on the name as this machine means there will be no proper replacement for the current Z series.

I've never been a fan of the external optical drive since my sister got a Sharp laptop back in the old Windows 98 days for uni. Was so annoying forgetting to have plugged in the cd-rom before booting up!

Seeing as most entertainment stuff these days is now ripped to hard drive I can kind of see the appeal in this for use on the move, although I would still prefer a small light laptop which had a built in optical drive.

Way out of my price range either way though.
