Out of warranty Rock CTX Pro with dead 7950GTX

Postby iac-uk » 04 Jan 2010, 12:23

Hi, long-time lurker with a quick question ...

Anyone know where I can source a Go 7950GTX for a Rock CTX Pro (Clevo M570U)?

Said lappy is now out of warranty with Rock & Stone/RockDirect won't touch it with a barge-pole (something about not being able to source the parts anymore, due to their past problems)

Thanks in anticipation.

I would have thought that they would want to make money out of you by getting a Gpu from Clevo and overcharging you for it...

In any case I would see whether you can get any help from the manufacturer

As far as I'm aware the Gpus are different That is the rock GPU has two connections on the bottom to the motherboard where as the dell only has one...

I've never tried it tho...

Plus youd need to see whether your could mount the dell card into the clevo heat sync...

Thanks for the Clevo service info, mrtoddie

& thanks for the offer evilras but I'm not sure whether it's just the GPU, a module or the whole shenanigans. I've never actually taken the lappy apart to look. I s'pose now is as good a time as any ;)

I've dropped their UK service centre a mail & we'll see if they come up with anything.

mrtoddie - I'm pretty sure you're right that while the GPU core is the same, the module isn't unfortunately.

See how you get on with Clevo, if you don't get anywhere it may be worth trying Kobalt and Novatech who also ship Clevo machines. A longer shot would be to ask at notebookforums.com where there's a few other companies shipping Clevo machines although as they're US based the costs could be just far too much.

You'll probably find that a new GPU for your machine will be very expensive... They were £300 + new. I would recommend buying a new laptop and ebaying your CTX as it should be worth around £100 with a dud GPU (around £300 fully working).

Alternatively you could search ebay for a second hand GPU - there are a couple on there at the moment but they are listed as faulty so probably wouldn't work.

:( yeah, I know. Was pre-warned by what little info the Rock support guy did give me. Eurocom are punting them out @ around £400.

Can buy a whole new laptop for that nowadays

I've been passed on to sales @ goldenstaruk, so not holding my breath ...

Hmmm doesn't bode well for me if they don't stock 7950's any more. If they're going to have it for months on end then I'll just ditch it.

Well, at least Goldenstar got back to me. The bad news is the replacement card is £400 & a 4-week lead time

GeForce Go 7900 GTX 256M £350
GeForce Go 7900 GTX 512M £380
GeForce Go 7950 GTX £400

Think I'll just scrap the thing & buy a new laptop :(
