gaming laptop suggestions

Postby EviL Ras » 22 Mar 2009, 12:19

ok, so i think the time is coming to "win" a new laptop. at first i was happy to go all out and spec up a dell m1730, but reckon i would yell them down to 1700. but then i realised i'm spending a lot extra to get sli!

so, can people suggest some models at better prices?
i want a better processor than my 2.16. quad/dual, dont mind.
huge hdd. dual hdd bays would be great!
4gb ram
shiv hot graphics. currently have 7950 gtx. so 9800 gtx or hd4850 i guess? sli would be nice as i'd keep this laptop for 3 years!
1920 x 1200 res is ideal! i would prefer 17", but happy to settle for 15" if price is better.
not too fussed on the make. tho i saw an advent gaming machine and i wasnt sure on the quality...

no price limit. anything under 1600 is a bonus if the specs are close to xps. under 1200 gets you big ras smiles. and under a grand gets you a special spam filled evening in the ras household!

Theres always the MSI GT725 I posted a while ago

P9500 (2.53 Ghz, Dual core)
4Gb RAM
ATI HD 4850
17" screen only 1680 x 1050 though and the HDD is only 500Gb

£1125 icl VAT and del, although build quality is an unknown and the look is an aquired taste.

Or a Zepto Hydra

Intel C2 DUO P8600 2,40GHz 1066MHz 3MB-25Watts
4GB ( 2x2GB) DDR3 PC8500 1066MHZ
Zepto Zpro2 N-Standard (NBG)
DVD-RW / CD-RW SATA
Keyboard Hydra UK A17
Hydra A17, WUXGA, 9800M GTX 1GB DDR3
Online Discount Hydra A17 Power
500GB 5400rpm SATA Harddisk
Environment Fee
Hydra A17 - Manual (UK, DE, SPA, FR, IT)
Bluetooth 2.0
Microsoft® Windows® Vista Ultimate- UK 64bit w. free Office trial

£1813 ish.
Again a bit of an unknown but something different to consider.

When I was looking to get my 15"er you couldn't get anything better than 9800GT for love nor money. Don't think that's changed unfortunately.

Well since you're winning it, you want to win at least £3k of laptop, right?! Might I suggest a Rock or Kobalt beast :P

Alternative to the Dell Outlet is this bloke: http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/eComputer ... m14&_pgn=2
He just sells Dell laptops on, think he buys them in bulk from them so can sometimes sell them a little cheaper than the outlet. Got my M1330 from him. No decent 1730's in atm though.

I'm not sure, I don't have the final order confirmation (just the temporary one) so I didn't note if it had that. I'm not too fussed as I'm not convinced it's that useful.

Just trying to decide whether to cancel the order or not as the Core i7 system was supposed to be my 'power' machine plus the XPS M1730 just looks so hefty with no batterylife. The Novatech X70 is meant to be here this week and while it looks great size-wise the low specs are putting me off, particularly with the processor which isn't an easy upgrade. I've looked at better configurations but even with the 2.5Ghz processor it's still around £1500+

Aye, i WANT a desktop. But love the fact i can game in the front room whilst sat next to the missus and watching telly. Rather than in a side room. That and we dont have space for a desktop in the flat.

Got to say, that MSI 725 is looking good!

* Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 2.53 GHz Dual-Core
* RAM - 4 GB (installed) 4 GB (max) - DDR2 SDRAM
* Hard Drive - 500 GB
* Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
* Screen - 17 in 1920 x 1200
* Optical Drive - DVD±RW (DL) / DVD-RAM
* Graphics - ATI Radeon HD 4850
£1099 at laptops direct.

Saves me a lot over the sli m1730!! Just wonder if a 4850 will do me!

On ultra it appears 9800 GTX gets 15 fps, 4850 gets 16 fps and 9800 GTX SLI gets 23. 50% more fps on ultra costs you £1000... hmm...

I have a 4850 on the Core i7 and it seems fine so far although I'd be wary of the MSI chassis as they don't have a good track record for performance laptops. The desktop does completely trash the laptops for money and performance these days however I find it's hard being limited to just one desk.

Hmm. i dont like moving away from dell, but then the msi does tick all the boxes. Out of interest, whats better. quad core 2ghz, or dual core 2.53ghz? They've upgraded the processor in the GT725.

Dell seem to be falling behind by quite a bit on the XPS nowadays compared to the Clevo based models.

Any news on mobile i7 based machines at all yet?

Nope and I doubt there will be for a while either - I would expect the mobile processors will be based off one of the i7 derivatives which has the dual channel memory controller rather than tri (hardly any performance loss) and an onboard PCI-E controller. i7 isn't well suited to laptops as unlike the current generation of processors which are mobile derived, i7 is server derived.
