techpond with IE 8 beta 2

Postby EviL Ras » 30 Sep 2008, 19:20

Ok, doesn't work so good! some of the formatting is a bit off (like posting a new message). And you can't click on the page numbers when choosing a thread! You have to aim for like a single pixel under the number!

Anyone else got experience of this?

I solely use FF3. I think IE's are getting steadily worse. Sorry can't be any help, can't even think of any useful advice :S

In all honesty IE8 "should" be the best browser going, until Firefox and Opera bring out there rivals, as its designed to completely follow all the web standards that IE never has.

But yea, FF3 gets my vote as well :P

IE8 is the least web standards compliant browser in the world, officially. As defined by it's [lack of] per compliance in rendering Acid3. I am stunned people still use it other than using it to download something else.

I use the preview Safari 4 browser at home and combined with the Glim plug in, there is nothing to touch it but Apple software - Safari, iTunes - really suffers under Windows GDI application/window environment although it would help if Apple didn't keep fecking push OS X window styles on to their Windows' applications.

Wait Soup, did you mean IE7 there or IE8?

I know IE7 fails the Acid test miserably, but I though IE8 was being designed from the ground up to actually meet these standards?

Both IE7 and IE8 fail miserably at Acid3, Microsoft have a lot of work to do as they need to re-write their rendering engine from scratch which is a mammoth task. Some of the things that Microsoft have done with IE8, like every single tab having a separate bundle of threads is definitely good and other browsers - Firefox I'm looking at you - should follow suit.

Fair enough, I was under the impression IE8 was being designed to comply with the Acid 3 test.

If you sign-up to Apple Developer Connection (ADC) you get access to most of their preview (beta) software although at present it's only running on Leopard. If you've not upgraded to Leopard, think about it. It has quite a speed boost over Tiger.

OS X upgrades are insanely easy, my Macbook took about an hour and had 2 prompts right at the start. I just left it to it and when I came back I had a nice shiny (and faster) Mac :)

If your mum's Mac had Leopard installed when she bought it then her OS X disc won't be any use to you - it's like an Windows XP restore disc in that it will only work on the exact same hardware that it was shipped with. If she has a Leopard retail/upgrade disk then you can use this - there are no keys, no copy protection and no DRM measures. Apple have no way of telling if my Macbook was upgraded with a retail disc (which it was) or from a OS X 10.5 disc image downloaded off a torrent site. Arguably they don't care that much, you bought the Mac from them and they already have your cash ;-)
