Ranking system

Postby admin@techpond » 08 May 2008, 21:54

Existing discussion is here: http://uklaptops.freeforums.org/forum-ranks-t11.html

Still a few different trains of thought on this one, if we can narrow it down to a few we can put a poll up.

johnmc @ uklatptops
I'll stick a poll on the system once we've decided on a few, at the moment the candidates are:

- reverse life
- technical
- fish
- cake

personally i believe it has to be relevant...ish and a bit of fun else won't be worth doing.
this kind of puts the reverse life idea out of commission completely. i liked it as it gave scale but has no relevance to the forum or its content. scale is quite important but not entirely neccessary as its all a bit of fun. if scale can be incorporated too then all the better though!

the different ranks should also kick in at milestone postings which i think should be
1. 0-49
2. 50-99
3. 100-499
4. 500-999
5. 1000-4999
6. 5000-9999
7. 10000+ (we know who'll get here way too soon to be considered healthy!)
8. special accolade for unspecified but valuable contribution to forum. not given away lightly.

this may have been the same template for the rock forum, i'm not sure. it is however a simple and easily identifiable template that any suggestions can be related to.

a suggestion may be (if cake were the topic)
1. Cupcake
2. Muffin
3. Eclair
4. Sponge
5. Gateaux
6. Jam Roly Poly
7. Fruit cake
8. Fish cake (for outstanding contribution to tech side of forum), Tart (for outstanding (???) contribution to the off topic side of the forum), Spotted Dick (for spammers).
finally, if birthdays are listed in profile, the mod/admin may be able to change status to Birthday cake for your birthday week which'd be quite nice.

i think they're all on a moderate scale of relevance and size.

The reverse life was quite relevent to the forum to be honest in the sense that a lot of people are quite 'geeky' (generally associated with computers and technology) and some do spend quite a lot of time on the forum. I'm less keen on the fish/cake idea at the moment as this is something that's going to be across the entire forum and it is a bit silly, more for the offtopic forum.

Also I believe we can attach image to rank as well so we can have two themes in a way.

the cake idea didn't appeal to me at first but i thought about it (a bit too much!) and felt it does have its merits.
-cake is a celebratory symbol and so a change when moving through the ranks will be an occassion. i can forsee more chance of "woohoo, i'm a gateaux" than "woohoo, i'm a geek/".
-everyone loves cake! so doesn't feel like its excluding for those of us who are less tech minded. i wouldn't want a new member to think i had more knowledge due to my ranking as i'm sure the majority of my posts will be non tech/opinion based whereas another may post less often but have the knowledge to really help those in need.
-cake is a theme that has run through the rock forum and continues today (part of our heritage as you put it john). it would be nice to keep some of the positives but in a slightly different form.
-cakes are very visual (with regards to attatching pictures)
-errr...everyone loves cake!

it'd be good when there are enough members to have a vote. the rock regulars are probably going to form the core of this forum also so waiting too long won't be a prob.
if each is shown in its full ranking state before a poll or vote is called then would be more thorough (along the lines of my example above) and an informed decision can be made by all.

tbh, the people are the integral part of the forum rather than the bells and whisltes. i do think it has to be made attractive to newcomers though. and reflect the mentality/content of the forum too.

I like the idea of fish as the forum is the Tech Pond. Maybe start as fry, minnow, goldfish, koi, pike, etc.

Otherwise if it is a techy board then you could base it around computers through the ages like ZX Spectrum, BBC, Commodore 64, Amiga, etc.

Well I remember having this debate a few years ago, I think it was Alasdair that came up with the idea to use memory size which I really liked.
To expand on this..

kilobyte
megabyte
gigabyte
terabyte
petabyte
exabyte
zettabyte
yottabyte

Very nice as well, would be even better if it started with byte though :P

Computer and memory seems a bit obvious? Quite a common choice for technical forums which puts me off it a bit although we could have a fish themed text but coupled with an image of computers.

The only problems with the obscure ones is that its quite awkward to tell which is actually higher than which.

i'm not keen on the geek factor but what about a simple binary listing and pictures of cake or fish?

00001 :cheesecake:
00010 :donut:
00011 :cupcake:
00100 etc
00101 etc
00110 :fish:
00111 :whale:
01000 etc
01001 etc
01010 etc

(i don't mean mix the 2 themes of cake and fish up but wanting to show both examples)

Expecting people to know binary is a bit much ;) It kind of annoys me that i'm that geeky as it is.

same applies to the bits and bytes or processors or anything tech related really. i know the binary as had to do it in school but the others, i could only guess at in parts.
