New anti-spam system added and mods

Postby Johnmcl7 » 03 Jan 2011, 02:15

For some reason at the moment this board is being hit really badly spammers, at the moment all accounts have to be manually activated to stop the spammers getting through but that isn't ideal as it may block real users and also my mailbox (and Steff's) is getting hit fairly constantly with the activation requests. I need to get the board upgraded which I've been saying for months (test one worked fine but forgotten how I did it :( ) which I think I'll try and do next week when I have plenty of time but for now I've installed a mod which is meant to be good at blocking spammers so will see how that goes. It checks the user's DNS and mail against blacklists plus their timezone which is often -12 for some reason and blocks them if enough hits are found. I've checked I could create a new account so time will tell if any are getting blocked.

Also I've installed better mod support now which means it should be easier to add mods so if anyone sees a phpbb3 mod that looks worth having (doesn't need to be useful) please let me know and I'll have a look.

Used correctly terrain is a second weapon in your arsenal, equal to your Titan itself. Make the battlefield work for you, or you will find it working for your opponent.

I was disappointed to see a spammer get through this morning although on checking the details it looks like it's a new one so that's understandable. I checked the 'block' log and surprised to find 95 pages of blocked attempts (25 a page) since implementing the mod and there's 140 pages now. They're not all blocked registration attempts though so I'm not quite sure how the system works but as long as it's blocking people that's good.

So, all the Sept 2016 members are spammers. They all have fake signatures or post spam. Time to update the spam system?

I've been having a read up on effective anti-spam measures which is challenging as it's changing all the time, I hadn't realise the reCapcha was completely broken. I've tried changing to a different Q&A system which is recommended as an effective counter-measure so will see how that does.

Its interesting as I'm a moderator on the macan owner forum too. but we NEVER get spam! That uses web wiz forums and i think techpond is better designed as a forum. But getting no spam in a group thats much busier than here is interesting. Theres no capcha thing on there, just a long register page.

We got no spam for ages here either, I assume there's some system that puts forums onto the spambot radar as we get different waves of it here. Some of the spam I think is entirely manual and done by a human which we can't do anything about and in general, when we get spam it's only a few posts whereas usually spambots just flood the entire forum. The one last night definitely seemed to be a spambot as it was posting all over the place.
