A potential data theft at steam...

steam wrote:Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe

I noticed that DC universe online and Star Trek online are both now free to download and play through steam. Having never played a MMORPG I am thinking about giving one of them a go. Has anyone play either and are they any good?

I played DC Universe for a while once it went F2P. It's very much like the other Super Hero mmorpgs, not breaking any boundaries, but it's certainly a complete product. The quests were of the usual 'kill 9 of these' 'rescue 4 of these' 'defeat Maglamar' style, with an occassional flying race thrown in. Very much like Champions Online, the most fun I had was making my character at the start, the only way I can think it differs after that stage is that your items change how you look, whereas CoH kept you with the same look throughout.

That tells you nothing really! Basically if you have a mmorpg itch, DCO isn't a bad way to scratch it, but don't expect WoW or TOR levels of immersion. Haven't tried STO, had some friends who played it for months, so that can't be terrible. I still think DDO or WAR are probably the best F2P ones around, if you can get over the dated graphics on DDO, and the inability to do any group content on WAR because no one is around.

How is Star Trek online funded if it's free to play, in game advertising or something?
