Re: Most foolproof way of taking ownership in OSX?

You have to be on a pc, but you can control a mac. For some reason macs are ALWAYS a dog on remote. Really? What software are you using? VNC works fine, so does Apple's Remote Desktop (which is based on the VNC framework) and Microsoft's RDC. If you're using software where the client (on the remote...

Re: Most foolproof way of taking ownership in OSX?

No of course not, it's a Mac and it just works! Pain in the neck there doesn't seem to be a way to do this properly especially on an operating system that boasts itself easy to use, looks like I'll need to go round and sort it out myself. There is certainly a right way to do it; you use Disk Utilit...

Re: Most foolproof way of taking ownership in OSX?

Aha! If the files are viewable from another OS then it sounds like the G5's filesytem security was on the default low setting in which case 'Repair Permissions' should fix this and shouldn't take more than a few minutes to run. If your friend is using the same login name (the password isn't an issue...

Re: Most foolproof way of taking ownership in OSX?

There are no fool proof ways, the difficulty will depend entirely on the security policies in place on the G5. UNIX permission-based file systems are renowned for being very secure! Fortunately Apple do not set the highest security settings on the file system by default so first try Disk Utility's '...

Re: New Macs - Nearly there!

Luke, Not heard of that one but I know there was some issue with some WD drives anti-shock conflicting with the Mac's - I was careful to avoid those WD drives when I put a 320Gb in my MBP recently! I sure hope the new MBPs have user assessable HDDs, as the (now old) MPBs require a complete disassemb...

Re: New Macs - Nearly there!

Does anyone know if the hard drive power down issue is resolved? i.e. that the HDD did not used to go into locked mode until around 15 seconds after the lid closed? Neither My MB or MBP do this, when the lid is closed the drives stop immediately, the only further drive activity will be when the Mac...

Re: 9800M in laptops..

You have to wonder how soon Nvidia's mobile G260/G280 chips are going to debut. It's usually about six months after the desktop launch when there is a significant change in architecture so that would put it out by the end of this year. Can't see it somehow, but equally, it wouldn't surprise me.

Re: Fallout 3

That sounds good! Oblivion had just the right mix of combat/exploration in that it never felt like a fighting game even though 95% of the missions involved you having to kill people/trolls/goblins/random nutters. I have high hopes for it, never played any of the previous games though and have no ide...

Re: techpond with IE 8 beta 2

OS X upgrades are insanely easy, my Macbook took about an hour and had 2 prompts right at the start. I just left it to it and when I came back I had a nice shiny (and faster) Mac :) If your mum's Mac had Leopard installed when she bought it then her OS X disc won't be any use to you - it's like an W...

Re: Fallout 3

I'm hoping it's more Oblivion than FPS. I still play Oblivion, there are still places on the map I've not explored much, I still find dungeons I've never been in and had a full quest log since I bought it March last year. Not even started Knights of the Nine quest either! I really love the whole, wa...

Re: New Macs - Nearly there!

Don't get too excited, the new Macbook is likely based around the Nvidia 9100M G chipset and although this has a 9400M derivative GPU core, it has a slow-arse bus and just 8 processors. Definitely better than the old IntelGMA950/X3100 but you'll still be gaming on low settings and/or sub-native reso...
